Remote Java jobs
Remote Java work is scarcer than remote work in newer ecosystems, and the reason is structural rather than cultural. A large share of Java hiring sits inside regulated industries where data residency, audit access and named-location contracts are constraints somebody signed, not preferences a manager can waive.

Read the geography clause carefully
Remote in this market very often means remote within a country, or within a list of states or member countries where the employer has a legal entity. That is not a bait and switch, it is a tax and compliance boundary. Every listing here carries the eligibility the employer stated where they stated one, and it is the first thing to check before investing an hour in an application.
Where fully distributed Java teams actually are
They cluster in a few recognisable places: product companies that were remote before it was common, infrastructure and developer-tooling vendors, and the consultancies that staff across borders by design. The work at the first two tends to be platform-shaped, with more ownership of deployment and observability than a typical enterprise role carries.
