Levelling is a compensation system, not a description

American employers attach a level to a role before they write it, and that level sets the pay band. It follows that the same responsibilities appear as senior at one company and mid at another, and that arguing about the title in an interview is usually arguing about money by proxy. Ask early which band a posting maps to; most recruiters will tell you, and it saves everyone a loop.

Where pay is actually published

Several states now require a salary range in the posting, so a meaningful share of US listings carry a real employer-published band while others carry nothing. This board never blends the two: a figure written by the employer is labelled published, and anything we estimated is labelled an estimate. The filter for published pay does what its name says, which is the only way that filter is worth having.
