What the work usually is

Most remote Rails openings are product engineering on a codebase that has been running for years — a long test suite, a queue of background jobs, and a Postgres database somebody has already had to tune under load. Teams that hire remotely settle arguments in writing, so a clear pull request description carries weight an office would have absorbed in conversation. Expect several deploys a day and a share of an on-call rotation.

Read the eligibility line before the salary line

Remote rarely means anywhere. A large share of these postings are remote within one country or one band of time zones, almost always because of payroll and tax rather than preference. Each listing carries the countries the employer said it can hire from, and where a posting genuinely takes applicants from anywhere we say so in place of a city. Checking that line first saves an application that was never eligible.
